NASA Chooses FileTekStorage Machine/1 Used for NASA's UARS Program Science Systems and Applications, Inc., (SSAI) awarded FileTek, Inc., a subcontract to provide NASA's Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite (UARS) program with an optical disk-based, mass storage subsystem. NASA selected FileTek's Storage Machine/1 after careful consideration of alternative storage technologies and software. The installation is deployed at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The goal of NASA's UARS program is to gather information about upper atmospheric changes that affect such things as the Earth's ozone depletion rate and climate. The UARS project enables long-term, global, continuous data collection. FileTek's Storage Machine is the data archival storage and retrieval subsystem for the UARS Central Data Handling Facility. Scientists and researchers worldwide access this information remotely and analyze it to determine man and nature's impact on the upper atmosphere. FileTek's Storage Machine and Storage Machine software efficiently manage terabytes of data stored in a hierarchy of optical and magnetic disk devices. The software provides direct record access from a variety of computer systems, ranging from workstations to mainframes, and support for local area network connectivity from Digital, UNIX and IBM hosts.
