Successfully Writes One Billion Files to Rockville, MD (August 3, 2005) - FileTek, Inc., a data access and management software provider, today announced that, in an ongoing test, it archived over one billion unique files to its StorHouse/RFS file system with no noticeable performance degradation. Files were written from four UNIX-based systems to a single StorHouse® configuration consisting of a Sun Fire V480 server, SATA RAID, and 9940 tape. This significant achievement dispels the myth that individual file systems cannot be used to successfully manage very large numbers of files because of inherent scaling and performance problems. Unlike traditional file systems, StorHouse/RFS eliminates these issues because it uses relational technology instead of inode and link-based structures to index and locate user files. An integral member of the StorHouse family of products, StorHouse/RFS is an easy-to-use solution for archiving and rapidly retrieving today's escalating volume of e-mail, voice mail, medical images, spreadsheets, customer statements, word processing documents, and other digitized data in file format. The software presents itself to an application as a virtual drive (an NFS, NTFS, or CIFS mount or share point). Applications read and write files to the virtual drive just as they would to any mapped Windows drive or NFS mount point. StorHouse is a comprehensive data storage and access management system specifically designed to administer massive amounts of structured and unstructured historical data, fixed content, and their associated backups. StorHouse technology combines an automatically managed virtual hierarchy of industry-leading scalable storage devices and Open System processors with specialized software components such as StorHouse/RFS. In support of persistent archives, StorHouse virtualization and automatic storage management capabilities enable the system to accept new storage devices and media types dynamically as they become available and migrate existing data to them automatically and transparently to user applications. Sherman Schorzman, FileTek's Vice President of Solutions Technology and Systems Engineering, commented, " When dealing with large-scale storage, you will reach a point where faster equipment and more bandwidth just won't solve your problems anymore. You need to engineer effective scalability into the file system. The purpose of our test was to prove that StorHouse/RFS meets its original design objective - to eliminate the inherent scaling barriers that exist in journaling and traditional inode-based file systems. By writing one billion files to StorHouse/RFS, we proved that the software does indeed accomplish this critical goal. With StorHouse/RFS scalability to billions of files and StorHouse virtualization and storage management features, including backup, recovery, migration, replication, retention, and data protection, FileTek has the necessary technology in place to build, manage, and support the world's largest digital archive."
