Press ReleasesUK Meteorological Office Selects FileTek for Massive Database Solution - Multi-million Dollar Contract Will Span Five Years Rockville, MD (November 30, 1999 ) – FileTek, Inc. today announced that The UK Meteorological Office (The Met. Office) has awarded the company a five-year contract to build one of the largest relational databases ever. Using FileTek's StorHouse software, The Met. Office has selected a solution capable of scaling to petabytes (1,000,000,000,000,000s of bytes) of data to be warehoused, managed, and accessed by scientists using atmospheric computer models for weather forecasting and climate research. The final contract was only awarded after a thorough competitive process. David Beamer, President of FileTek, will sign the contract today at a ceremony at The Met. Office, located outside of London. The Met. Office operates two networks of weather forecasting services: one providing information to the armed forces - especially the Royal Air Force, and the other focusing on services to industry, commerce (including the media), and the public. Their Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research, which will be the main user of the new database, has been in existence since 1990. "This is truly a breakthrough system solution for both The Met. Office and FileTek in terms of database size," said Mr. Beamer. "We are very proud to be associated with such a prestigious government agency, and I am also particularly proud of the FileTek employees in our London and Rockville offices who have worked so hard to configure this solution." "The Met. Office prides itself as being a centre of excellence for the development of the science of meteorology," said John Ponting, Director of Information Technology at The Met. Office. "This new, advanced application will undoubtedly help us continue the high standard we've set for ourselves." StorHouse software provides direct record-level access, including the processing of SQL queries, to data anywhere in the application's automated storage hierarchy (including tape) regardless of the source application. This feature eliminates the hours-to-days it takes traditional data warehouse systems to restore archived data from tape to disk for analysis and decision making. "StorHouse and The Met. Office are a perfect fit," said John Burgess, Chief Technical Officer at FileTek. "When we designed the software, this is just the kind of application we had in mind. We're very confident it will not only satisfy, but also exceed this new customer's expectations." About
