FileTek CEO William C. Thompson is Finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award - Recognized for Long Term Leadership, Vision, Creativity and Corporate Success

Rockville, MD (June 24, 1999 ) – Some things just take a little longer to happen than they should. Take the case of William (Bill) Thompson, Chief Executive Officer of FileTek, Inc., a software and data management company based in Rockville, Maryland. After successfully building a thriving business for over 15 years, Bill and his innovative company have finally been recognized for their success and vision. Bill Thompson is among the 50 Finalists for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and one of only six finalists in the software category, to be presented the evening of June 24th at the Ritz Carlton in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia.

The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award is a national award that will be presented to the entrepreneur who has achieved outstanding business results through the application of effective leadership principles. This award will acknowledge the individual whose personal leadership has built an organization characterized not only by high performance but also by ethics, integrity, and high trust.

Bill Thompson started down the path of entrepreneurial success by founding Centennial Systems with $1000 of capital nearly a quarter of a century ago. Centennial quickly became a successful financial services firm focused on the federal government. While Centennial no longer sells its services in the government market, it has remained a consistently profitable enterprise by serving a specialized niche in the computer and communications field. More importantly, Centennial’s early success was the springboard of a new endeavor founded some seven years later which led to the recognition and the Ernst & Young Award finalist status.

In 1983, a visionary engineer named John Burgess (now FileTek’s Chief Technology Officer) wanted to build a unique data server product that could store and automatically manage extremely large volumes of data. Bill saw in John’s idea an opportunity to help major businesses better manage their data, and FileTek was formed in early 1984. Bill took great risk in founding FileTek as he decided to personally finance FileTek rather than use outside venture capital. By 1993, FileTek had already installed microfiche replacement (COLD) solutions at the country’s largest banks and telephone companies. But this niche market was too small to sustain growth, so in 1994 Bill made a strategic decision to enhance the software by developing a Standard Query Language (SQL) interface that would make the server more universal.

The result was FileTek’s StorHouse® -- a specialized system that manages massive volumes of atomic-level data. StorHouse combines Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) techniques with the benefits of Relational Database Management software. The StorHouse system is unique in its ability to access a single row of data regardless of the database size and where the row is located in a hierarchy of storage devices. The databases StorHouse manages can grow to 100s of terabytes – even petabytes (1,000 terabytes) of atomic data.

Customers use StorHouse to improve decision making and reduce operational costs. For instance, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) requires an intimate knowledge of customer buying patterns and interests. This level of "one-to-one marketing" is built upon the access and use of atomic-level data. StorHouse quickly and efficiently moves atomic data to the applications that profile customer behavior.

By 1997 FileTek had positioned itself as a pioneer in Atomic Data Storage within the dynamic Data Warehouse market, and is now enjoying the business opportunities associated with the exponential growth of data assets to be managed. Bill Thompson has methodically surrounded himself with a strong team, and views the FileTek future with great optimism.
